About Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

South Carolina’s Grand Strand stretches 60 miles from the quaint fishing village of Little River along the North Carolina border to the Tidelands of Georgetown and encompasses Myrtle Beach, a bustling year-round resort area known as the “Jewel of South Carolina.” The Myrtle Beach area enjoys a mild annual average temperature of 64° F with an average of 215 sunny days each year. From its humble beginnings, the Grand Strand has evolved into one of the top vacation destinations on the East Coast – drawing approximately 15.2 million visitors annually and boasting more than 89,000 guestrooms, 1,900 restaurants and 300 outlet stores. A golfer’s paradise (Myrtle Beach itself is known as the “Seaside Golf Capital of the World”), the Grand Strand offers more than 100 championship courses designed on former rice plantations by some of the world’s top course designers.

The Grand Strand also features miles of white sandy beaches, lively amusement parks (including the brand-new Freestyle Music Park!), race tracks, water parks, fishing piers, boat charters, nightclubs, miniature golf courses, old plantation gardens, historic homes, outdoor recreational activities and massive shopping, dining and entertainment complexes such as Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the Beach.

Myrtle Beach Attractions

The Grand Strand offers visitors hundreds of fun-filled activities for an amazing family vacation getaway. Whether your preferences include riding a roller coaster, zooming around a racetrack, observing wildlife and nature, or chilling out on the beach or at a water park, the Myrtle Beach area provides your ticket to fun. Naturally, the fun begins at the beach, the Myrtle Beach area’s No. 1 attraction. Sixty miles of coastline provide visitors with ample opportunities for fun such as swimming, surfing, parasailing, shell collecting, sunbathing, fishing and more. Take a cruise aboard a riverboat along the Waccamaw River, or rent a personal watercraft or pontoon boat.

Not-to-be-missed attractions in the Myrtle Beach area include the Children’s Museum of South Carolina, Alligator Adventure, Ripley’s Aquarium, MagiQuest, Family Kingdom Amusement Park & Water Park (home to the legendary all-wooden roller coaster, the Swamp Fox), Myrtle Waves Water Park, NASCAR SpeedPark and Wild Water Water & Race Theme Park. In addition, Freestyle Music Park (formerly Hard Rock Park), a 55-acre music-themed amusement park, opened in Myrtle Beach in May 2009. The theme park boasts more than 50 attractions, a multipurpose live music amphitheater with state-of-the-art sound, roller coasters, children’s play areas, restaurants, cafes and retail stores.

The Grand Strand is also considered the “Miniature Golf Capital of the World” with approximately 50 miniature golf courses to choose from such as Dragon’s Lair Fantasy Golf, Hawaiian Rumble Miniature Golf, Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Golf and Cancun Lagoon Golf.

Popular day trips from Myrtle Beach include Huntington Beach State Park, which features a lagoon, maritime forest, salt marshes and three miles of the most well-preserved beach on the Grand Strand; Hopsewee Plantation, a South Carolina National Historic Landmark built in 1740; and Brookgreen Gardens, which is considered the finest outdoor presentation of American figurative sculpture in the world. Brookgreen Gardens is home to more than 900 works by 300 of the greatest names in American sculpture. In addition to the Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington Sculpture Garden, visitors to Brookgreen Gardens can explore the Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve, which contains acre upon acre of native plants and animals, as well as the E. Craig Wall Jr. Lowcountry Center, which features exhibits and educational programs that focus on the area’s rich history.
